Istanbul is undoubtedly one of the most exciting tourist destinations worldwide. The rapidly modernising country with one foot in Europe and one in Asia, is the largest in Turkey and has a metropolitan population of 13 million, or 18% of the whole Turkey's population. Istanbul is a major economic, financial and cultural centre for the country. The historic sites within it were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Some places of interest include: Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), Sultanahmet (Blue Mosque), Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Basilica Cistern, Byzantine Hippodrome, Dolmabahce Palace, Grand Bazaar, Egyptian (Spice) Market, Princes' Islands. A ride on the Bosphorus should not be missed.
Turkish people are world-famous for their hospitality and Turkish cuisine is considered one of the most delicious in the world. The city is abundant with hotels, hostels and B&Bs for all tastes and budgets.
